Track our turtles

We are currently tracking two endangered leatherback sea turtles. Real time maps can be found on www.trackturtles.com.

Tracking of leatherbacks is a collaborative project with the Sea Turtle Conservancy. If you wish to access these data for a school research project or wish to collaborate with us, please do not hesitate to contact us. We share and license data using a Creative Commons license Cc.logo.circle.svg

  • Hello my names is Kaidence and I am doing my endangered Animal report on the Leatherback Sea turtle I wish I could donate?

  • This a very inserting species of turtles. I wish that i could donate but unfortunately i cant. I am actually writing a children book for my intro to Ag class in this species of sea turtles!

  • How often do the tracking update? Been watch isla for a few days and haven’t seen here move, I’m new to this…

    • Isla is occasionally sending data to us but the system is unable to calculate a location. This is likely due to bio fouling of her tag and low state of charge of the batteries on her transmitter. We have followed her for more than 640 days now and we are hoping that she will nest this season. Her last data location shows here very close to her “normal” nesting beach. When new data arrives it will be plotted on her map automatically.

    • The transmitter that is attached to Kailani relays data to us a few times a day. The data she sends is is often deemed low quality and is not plotted on the map. When high quality locations are received, they are plotted on the map. As a result, her track will only appear to update once or twice a day.

  • Maybe the website i purchased this bracelet that donates money to saving turtles is a hoax and gives you a turtle name that you helped from making the purchase but yet the turtle does not move on this tracking website makes
    No sense

  • Hi my name is Danielle and I just adopted Kailani!
I’m super excited…i love sea turtles and I was excited to be able to do this.
Will I receive updates of her, pictures and updated tracking information?

    • They do not. This is one of many companies out there selling jewelry and claiming to support our work but they are a scam.

  • this website is a scam!! do not spend your money here as god only knows where it’s going. ‘donated’ to this cause and adopted a turtle for the said turtle to not be tracked and then ‘lost’??? the company also do not reply to emails about this…don’t waste your money, consider finding a legitimate website and company

  • I Love you, my girl Malone! Stay safe honey and enjoy your relaxing current. I wish I knew your age, though. Take care and I hope the best for the others as well! ❤-Katelyn

  • my kids got me this for mothers day. Im excited to see Kailani do something but she hasn’t moved yet.

  • Why is my adopted Leatherback turtle Kailani not recorded anywhere anymore? Each time I type in her name it comes up with Not Found…….during March & April I was able to track her & enjoyed doing this.
My son adopted her for my 72 Birthday which I was thrilled with. I did receive a “Turtle” neckless @ a later date, was this a scam? Please help.

    • Kailani is no longer being tracked as her transmitter has stopped working. It is highly likely that her batteries have been exhausted.

  • Why don’t we see more turtle like Juniper in the gulf? Is it rare for them to nest on the gulf side?

    • We would love to track more Gulf turtles! It is pretty rare to find leatherbacks nesting on the Gulf side of Florida. Last season there was a turtle that nested on Sarasota beaches, and there was one that nested on Sanibel in 2015. Juniper is a pretty rare leatherback and we are excited to be tracking her.

    • The batter on her transmitter ran out. We were lucky to get as much time as we did with her. Typically we only get about six months.

    • It’s possible that we can track Kailani again if she returns to nest. Typically they nest every 2-3 years. The transmitters we use don’t have replaceable batteries so we would have to buy a brand new transmitter.

  • i find this site absolutely fascinating! makes this sss79 year old retired teacher a reason to get up early in the morning!

    • Unfortunately her transmitter stopped working, likely because the battery ran out. If you were tracking her after a jewelry company offered her, we are sad to say we are not associated with them. Unfortunately the companies selling jewelry and providing our tracking data are a scam. They have sold thousands of pieces of jewelry and claim they are supporting our work but they are not. They are taking tracking data from our website and sending it to those that purchase items from them but they are not affiliated with our nonprofit and we receive no benefits from them. We are very sorry that you have fallen victim to this but, unfortunately, there is nothing we can do. We encourage you to report the company. You can always follow our active turtles at http://www.trackturtles.com for free. We try to post pictures to our social media accounts if we’re able to get them but since we’re working at night, it’s not always possible.

  • I am so excited to have Tamarind as a new “adoptive” member of our family. Can you please tell us more about this leatherback? Wondered if there is somewhere on the website we can learn more demographics? He/she? Age? Weight? Length? possible photo taken at tagging? I’d pay extra!!

    • Hi Melissa, The battery on Tartleby’s transmitter likely ran out of power or the transmitter has fallen off as designed. Keep an eye on our website as we will be tracking several more turtles in 2022.
